Statement from the Blue Cross Broad Street Run on the passing of former Race director Joe Cook

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Joe Cook. Broad Street Run Race Director 1982 to 1995.  Current Blue Cross Broad Street Run race director Jim Marino stated the following “Joe Cook was my mentor, friend and guiding force in the success of the Broad street run for many years.  The race was his baby and he brought it from infancy to the teenage years with great success.   The entire race staff and I were lucky enough to pick up his great organizational skills along the way as we worked closely together year after year on the Broad Street Run and later the Philly Marathon and numerous activities and events for the Philadelphia Recreation Department.  He always kept an eye on me to make sure we were doing things the right way.  I always appreciated his comments and critiques.  These critiques continued to help me build upon his great work.  I have always said that the Broad Street Run was Joe’s race and that I just happened to be carrying the torch in following his example.  Now the Blue Cross Broad Street Run is the 6th largest race in the country at any distance in large part due to the great groundwork of Joe Cook. I know I can speak on behalf of all of Joe’s fellow co-workers that it was a true pleasure to be a part of his team.”
